French Fashion Trailblazer, Thierry Mugler, dies at 73
French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, whose dramatic designs were worn by celebrities like Madonna, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and more, has died at the age of 73.
“We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022,” his team posted on Instagram along with the photo of a black square. “May his soul Rest In Peace.”
Mugler, who launched his brand in the 1970s, became known for his avant-garde style, defined by broad shoulders and a tiny waist. The shapes that he designed transformed his models into works of art altering them into machines with robotic limbs or dressing them in motorcycle bustiers with handles.
Under the brand's current creative director Casey Cadwallader, the Mugler label has experienced a resurgence. Cadwallader took to Instagram to show her love in remembering the legendary designer and wrote, "Manfred, I am so honored to have known you and to work within your beautiful world. You changed our perception of beauty, confidence, representation, and self-empowerment. Your legacy is something I carry with me in everything I do. Thank you."
