Sam Smith & Kim Petras drop their sexy collab “Unholy”
Sam Smith and Kim Petras released their sexy and theatrical collaboration song “Unholy.”
The track is definitely a new venture for Sam Smith who is used to singing powerful ballads. The song begins with their acapella vocals rising operatically. This is in line with Sam Smith’s “villain era” that they told Entertainment Tonight about.
The song’s theme revolves around adultery, specifically of a husband who frequents “the body shop” aka the infamous L.A. strip club. These dark undertones are beautifully complemented by the music’s composition — intense bass drums, an intense beat, and ethereal background vocals that ring like pipe organs.
For German pop artist Kim Petras, on the other hand, “Unholy” is definitely not far from her mark. Her latest album, “Slut Pop,” very much fits into this sexy club genre. Despite being musically distant, Smith and Petras’ sounds complement each other surprisingly well — Smith’s sobering power alongside Petra’s femme fatale.
The music video is a burlesque fantasy adding to the theatrical feel of the song, and features drag icons Violet Chachki and Gottmik.
The song is garnering traction on social media becoming a TikTok sensation propelling it higher on the charts.
“Unholy” truly finds Sam Smith switching up their sound. In this particular track the risk pays off however, this is definitely not the arena Sam Smith stays in. “Unholy” is short but ultimately great and catchy., and the collaborative efforts between Smith and Petras work out incredibly well.
Details of Smith’s next studio album – including the release date, tracklist, and cover artwork – have not been revealed yet.
