Saweetie has released a new single featuring H.E.R from her upcoming album, Pretty Bitch Music.

In the song, the two artists sing about craving a brief feeling of closeness with a romantic partner. “I wanna fall in love for the weekend,” Saweetie raps. “Three boyfriends, I don’t know where I’m sleeping.”

This collaboration really had me excited just because I was really curious about what the end result would sound like. At first listen, Closer is definitely a catchy single that continues to show off Saweetie’s impeccable skills. The funk-inspired production fits smoothly with H.E.R’s high notes and allows us to see her versatility.

That being said, there’s a too-close-to-home resemblance to Doja Cat and SZA’s smash hit Kiss Me More as well as Doja Cat’s earlier hit Say So. All songs are disco-inspired and have a similar funky groovy production. Not to mention that both songs include R&B and rap artists. It seems like Saweetie wanted to emulate Kiss Me More’s success, and rightfully so, Kiss Me More was the sixth most played song of the past year and has already won and been nominated for multiple awards.

Nevertheless, I am still extremely excited for Saweetie’s debut album which is slated for a release later this year.
