Billie Eilish surprise releases the emotional “Guitar Songs”
Billie Eilish has officially released Guitar Songs, which features two new acoustic tracks, TV, which she and brother Finneas debuted during a U.K. performance in June, and the brand new track The 30th.
The first song, TV, was first performed live in Manchester recently, and made headlines for referencing the worldwide spectacle of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s court battle, as well as overturning Roe v. Wade in the US. The track is extremely delicate as it finds Eilish singing in an almost contemperary-poem-like song. It’s emotionally driven and feels relatable with it’s narration of current events.
Towards the end of the track, the acoustic recording blends with the sound of the crowd from the Manchester show, hearing the song for the first time ever and repeating the lines. Their shared helplessness about the songs topics gets louder and louder, building from sympathy to a sort of collective sadness.
Billie talked about The 30th sharing that it was the first song she and her brother, Finneas, have written since Happier Than Ever.
“That’s why it’s called ‘The 30th’,” Billie said. “Because something happened on November 30th and it had just been the most indescribable thing to have to witness and experience. I had been writing down all these thoughts that I was having. I was with Finneas, and I was like, “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you were planning on doing, but we need to write this song about this right now.”
The track finds Eilish narrating what seems to be a horrible accident that happened to someone close to her. Following in the same emotional tone as the first song, The 30th is personal is in line with Eilish’s last album.
The singer also said she's "going to hopefully make another album in the next year"
