Monét X Change: The Multifaceted Queen Talks New Music, Drag, and Future Plans
We had a chance to chat with Monét X Change, the drag superstar known for her groundbreaking appearance on the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” franchise, has been making waves with her latest musical endeavor. After teasing her upcoming album for some time, she recently released the first of her two-part EP series, “GREY RAINBOW VOL.1”. This collection features dream-like songs with harps and influences from Monét's St. Lucian heritage.
Reflecting on the release, Monét expressed her joy and relief at finally sharing her work. "I’m so happy to have this project finally out," she shared enthusiastically. The journey to this moment has been long, with three and a half years dedicated to perfecting the music. Monét recalled the first recording session in June 2020 and marveled at how the song "U ON U" evolved from a rough version to its polished final form.
The choice of the album's name, "Grey Rainbow," encapsulates Monét's perspective on love, lust, and desire. "I don't think with matters of love, lust, and desire, anything is black and white. A lot of it is grey, and people should allow themselves to feel that," she explained. This nuanced view of emotions is a theme that runs through her music.
Monét's decision to release the album in two parts was a thoughtful one. With 16 songs at her disposal, she and her team realized that the first eight tracks felt like one journey, while the next seven felt like another. This led to the creation of two volumes, with the second installment expected later this year. "Volume two is different but very exciting nonetheless," Monét hinted.
Among the tracks on "Grey Rainbow Vol 1," the song "Streetlight" stands out for its emotional depth. Monét delves into her personal experiences with unavailable lovers, a theme that resonated with many fans. "Writing 'Streetlight' was emotional. I spent my twenties involved with unavailable, DL guys. It was personal, and I wondered if I could share that. But seeing people relate to it, whether they are trans, queer, or gay, knowing it's not just me, is deeply connecting."
Monét's creative vision extends beyond her music to her music videos. The video for "Rotation" featuring London Hilll was inspired by her love for visual storytelling and the show P-Valley. "We shot it in a real strip club, and it was a strict, exciting shoot. I wanted something in-your-face and over the top, contrasting the more subdued vibe of 'Body.'"
Fans of Monét and Bob The Drag Queen are eagerly awaiting a collaboration between the two. Monét envisions a 90s R&B vibe with her singing the hook and Bob rapping. "Every Sibling Rivalry fan asks about it. It’s going to happen. It’ll be dope."
Monét is also making history as the first drag queen to perform opera at a mainstream level. She is set to perform her song "Body" with a full orchestra, blending R&B and classical music. "Classical music helped me find my voice through college. To infuse R&B and classical music and perform with an orchestra is crazy. It's surreal to think about."
Discussing the place of drag in mainstream culture, Monét offered insightful commentary. She pointed out that America is lagging behind other countries, such as the UK, where drag queens are regularly featured on TV shows as celebrities. "Here, we’re still seen as a novelty. But we’re talented and beautiful, and we just need to keep pushing until we're recognized."
As for the latest season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars”, Monét is rooting for Gottmik, Plastique, and Angeria. "Plastique’s runways leave us gagged every week, Gottmik is hilarious and talented, and Angeria was amazing in her season and continues to be."
Monét is also doing her Drag Race review podcast, “Sibling Watchery”, with Trinity The Tuck this season. "I love working with Trinity. She’s professional, funny, and always delivers. We’ve worked together a lot, and she’s always up for a good time."
Looking ahead, Monét will be participating in the first St. Lucia Pride this September and has expressed that she will try to vlog the experience for fans.
Monét also showed interest in returning to Drag Race, but only if it is a duo season with Bob The Drag Queen. "I’d love to compete with Bob as a duo. It would be epic."
Monét X Change’s journey continues to be one of resilience, talent, and boundless creativity. As she continues to break barriers and inspire, we eagerly await the next chapter in her extraordinary career and what she’s going to do next.
